Electric and induction hob fitting

Electric hob installation

A replacement hob needs to fit the kitchen as well as the electrical supply. Let us check the details before you arrange the installation.

Upkeepone handles electric hob installation enquiries across London, Essex and Kent. Whether you are replacing a ceramic hob or planning an induction hob in a new kitchen, send the model, postcode and fitting details so we can confirm the work required.

Qualified engineers, with NAPIT or NICEIC registration where applicable. Attendance and the installation scope are confirmed for your property and appliance.

Tell us about the new hob

Request an installation callback

Include your postcode, new hob make and model, what it is replacing and the worktop material. Mention any kitchen alterations or gas disconnection needed.

Our team will be in touch as soon as possible to discuss your needs.

Not sure about the existing connection? Say so in your message. Leave covers and wiring in place; an enquiry does not confirm a booking.

Before the hob is ordered

Will the new hob fit your worktop?

Replacing a built-in hob involves more than matching its advertised width. The opening, worktop construction and space around and beneath the appliance need to suit the particular model. This matters especially when changing hob type or fitting into an existing kitchen.

The opening and worktop

Send the model numbers and any opening dimensions you already have. Tell us whether the surface is laminate, timber, stone or quartz. Cutting, enlarging or supporting a worktop needs its own assessment and may require a specialist.

What sits underneath

Mention an oven, drawer or cupboard below the hob. Installation depth, clearances and ventilation vary by model. Existing cabinetry may need attention even when the top surface appears to fit.

Extraction and kitchen changes

A hob with an integrated extractor brings ducting or recirculation requirements into the project. Share the proposed arrangement and any kitchen fitter’s plans, so the electrical connection and other fitting work can be quoted clearly.

For example, Bosch’s induction hob installation guidance highlights ventilation and checking the exact model’s manual. Use the instructions for your own appliance; measurements from a different model are not a fitting specification.

The circuit must suit the appliance

Checking the supply for an electric or induction hob

A working old hob does not prove that its connection is suitable for the replacement. The electrician needs to consider the new appliance’s electrical requirements alongside the existing circuit, protective devices, isolation and connection point.

Some hobs have a manufacturer-specified plug connection; others require hardwiring. Models with configurable power limits also need the correct installation assessment and setup. Avoid choosing a hob solely because a listing says it works with a particular supply.

Share what you can see safely

A model number, product link and photograph of the kitchen position are useful starting points. Do not pull out the hob, remove a socket or consumer-unit cover, or expose wiring to gather information. If you do not know the circuit details, we can discuss what assessment is needed.

Any new circuit, connection-point change or other electrical work should be identified and priced before it proceeds. It is not automatically included in a replacement fitting quotation.

Plan both parts of the change

Replacing a gas hob with an induction hob

Tell us at the outset if the existing hob uses gas. The gas appliance must be disconnected and the supply dealt with safely by a Gas Safe registered engineer qualified for that work. An electrical installation enquiry alone does not include or confirm gas work.

The replacement may also need a different worktop opening and an electrical supply that was not needed for the old hob. Agree who will carry out each task and in what order. If the property uses LPG, say so: the relevant gas qualification must cover that fuel.

GOV.UK explains gas-work registration. You can also check an engineer’s registration and qualifications through the routes described by HSE.

Compare the complete job

How much does electric hob installation cost?

The price depends on the fitting work and the electrical provision at your address. A straightforward replacement on a suitable existing connection has a different scope from a new kitchen, a gas-to-electric change or a hob that needs another circuit.

For a useful quotation, send your postcode, appliance model, whether the hob is already delivered, the existing hob type and any kitchen plans. Tell us about stairs, parking, building access and any date you are working towards. A preferred date remains subject to confirmation.

Confirm the connection work

Ask whether the quote covers disconnection of the old electric hob, fitting and securing the new one, electrical checks, functional testing and relevant records. Confirm who supplies the appliance and any materials.

Agree any additional tasks

Worktop alterations, cabinet changes, extraction, gas work, new wiring and removal or recycling need to be expressly included if required. Check the total, VAT and any travel charges before accepting the quotation.

No fixed installation price is stated here because the appliance and site details need checking first. We will clarify the quotation route from the information you provide.

From fitting details to a usable kitchen

Installation checks, testing and handover

  1. Review the model and site. The proposed hob, instructions, fitting space and electrical provision establish what needs doing.
  2. Agree the scope and attendance. Confirm responsibilities for extra trades, appliance delivery and access before the installation is arranged.
  3. Carry out the agreed work. The hob must be fitted and connected appropriately for the model and installation. If an unsafe or unsuitable condition is found, the next step needs explaining before work continues.
  4. Check operation and keep the records. Ask for the relevant test and completion records, appliance instructions and an explanation of the controls and any configured settings.

Our engineers are qualified, with NAPIT or NICEIC registration where applicable. Ask for the relevant registration details and scope for your work when booking.

Electrical certification and Building Regulations

A new circuit requires an Electrical Installation Certificate. For suitable additions or alterations without a new circuit, a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate or an EIC may apply. See NICEIC’s explanation of electrical certificates.

In England, installing a new circuit is notifiable work. A replacement appliance connected to an existing suitable circuit is not automatically notifiable. Notification and electrical certification are separate matters; agree what applies to the actual job. Approved Document P covers electrical safety in dwellings in England; other UK jurisdictions have different requirements.

Need a different cooking-appliance service?

For a complete cooker, use our electric cooker installation page. If you are keeping a faulty cooker, read about electric cooker repairs; for a separate oven, see electric oven repairs. Describe a hob fault in your enquiry so the team can check suitable repair support rather than treating it as a replacement installation.

Electric and induction hob installation FAQs

Can I replace a ceramic hob with an induction hob?

Often, but the new hob needs checking against both the kitchen and the electrical supply. Compare the exact model’s fitting requirements with the worktop opening, space beneath it and existing circuit. A hob of the same advertised width is not necessarily a direct replacement. Send the proposed model before buying if you want to clarify the installation work.

Will my new hob work on the existing cooker circuit?

That depends on the hob’s requirements and the condition and capacity of the circuit. An electrician needs to assess the supply, protection and connection arrangement. There is no single cable size or circuit rating suitable for every hob. If the appliance has a power-limiting option, its use must be assessed against the manufacturer’s instructions and the installation.

Can you install a hob with a plug?

Tell us the exact model and whether the manufacturer supplies it with a plug. Some models are designed for that arrangement; others need a fixed connection. A plug fitted to an appliance does not establish that the socket or circuit at your property is suitable. Do not use an extension lead or change the connection to make a different model fit.

Can you remove a gas hob and fit an electric one?

Describe the existing gas hob and the proposed electric model when enquiring. Gas disconnection and capping must be arranged with a Gas Safe registered engineer qualified for the gas and appliance involved. The electrical supply and worktop may also need changes. Ask for the separate responsibilities, sequencing and charges to be confirmed before a visit is booked.

Does hob installation include cutting the worktop and taking the old hob away?

Only where those tasks have been specifically agreed. Share the worktop material and any safely available opening dimensions. Stone, quartz or other specialist worktops may need a separate contractor. Ask whether appliance removal, recycling and packaging disposal are included, rather than assuming they form part of the electrical connection price.

What paperwork should I receive after electrical work?

Ask the installer which records apply to the agreed work. A new circuit needs an Electrical Installation Certificate. An addition or alteration without a new circuit may use a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate or an EIC. Building Regulations notification is separate: in England, a new circuit is notifiable, while connecting a replacement hob to an existing suitable circuit is not automatically notifiable. Keep the appliance instructions and relevant completion records together.

Send us the hob model and kitchen details

Include the postcode, proposed appliance, existing hob type and any worktop or kitchen changes. We will review the installation request and confirm the next step and suitable attendance.
