UK LPG uses and service routes
LPG can fuel heating, hot water, cooking, mobile units and industrial equipment
The fuel name does not determine the paperwork. A rented home, catering trailer, static caravan and factory can all use LPG but require different competence, inspection and maintenance routes.
The direct answer
Most customer enquiries fall into three practical groups
HSE identifies LPG uses including heating and cooking appliances, industrial applications and vehicles. For inspection and certification, start by describing where the equipment is installed and how it is used.
Heating, hot water and cooking
Homes, rental properties, holiday accommodation, park homes and static caravans may use LPG boilers, water heaters, fires, hobs and cookers supplied by cylinders or a bulk tank.
Fixed and mobile catering
Restaurants, pubs, food trucks, trailers, market stalls and event units may use fryers, griddles, ovens, grills, water boilers and specialist catering appliances.
Process heat and equipment
Commercial, agricultural and industrial sites may use LPG for space heating, process heat, drying, forklifts, generators or other manufacturer-designed equipment.
Understand the fuel before the appliance
LPG normally means propane, butane or a mixture stored under pressure
LPG is stored as a liquid in canisters, cylinders or bulk tanks and becomes vapour when released for use. An odorant helps people detect a leak. HSE warns that LPG is flammable and heavier than air, so escaping vapour can collect in drains, basements and other low places.
The appliance, regulator, pressure, ventilation, pipework and engineer competence must match the actual fuel and setting. "Gas appliance" or "LPG-ready" is not enough evidence on its own.
Same fuel, different installation rules
Four common LPG settings need different booking information
Domestic LPG
List boilers, fires, cookers, hobs and water heaters. A boiler service, landlord safety record, installation and fault repair are separate outputs.
Commercial and mobile catering
State the fixed or mobile setting, every appliance, extraction or interlock arrangement, cylinder storage, trading use and any council, insurer or event deadline.
Leisure accommodation
Identify static, touring, residential or holiday use; cylinder or bulk supply; regulator arrangement; every appliance; and any park or letting requirement.
Industrial and agricultural LPG
Provide the process, appliance or plant, supply pressure, tank and service-pipework boundary, operating conditions, maintenance history and site permit requirements.
Typical appliance uses
The appliance list determines the competence and inspection scope
Boilers and water heaters
These can serve homes, holiday accommodation, staff facilities, commercial premises or remote buildings. Send the make, model, data plate, flue arrangement and supply details.
Hobs, cookers and ovens
Domestic and commercial appliances may look similar but sit within different work categories. Confirm the operating setting and whether the appliance was designed or approved for LPG.
Fryers, griddles, grills and boilers
List every appliance, including equipment not currently in use. The unit, storage locker, hoses, regulators, pipework and ventilation form part of the installation information.
Barbecues and temporary setups
Follow the equipment and cylinder supplier instructions. A domestic barbecue is not automatically suitable for a commercial stall, enclosed structure or mobile unit.
Industrial heat and generators
Manufacturer instructions, process risks, supply pressure, ventilation, isolation and maintenance responsibilities must be established before work is allocated.
Autogas and other uses
Vehicle fuel systems and specialist LPG equipment require their own competent route. A property or catering gas certificate is not an automotive conversion approval.
Choose the required output
Using LPG does not automatically mean you need the same certificate
Define who requires the paperwork
State whether the record is for a landlord, council, market, event organiser, insurer, park operator, employer or internal compliance file. Provide any exact document wording before attendance.
Name each appliance
A service follows the appliance manufacturer's requirements and is not the same as certifying an entire installation. Ask what components, tests, cleaning and records are included.
Describe the symptom safely
Send error codes and non-intrusive photographs. Do not reset safety devices, dismantle equipment or repeatedly restore a supply that trips or smells of gas.
Check manufacturer approval first
Do not assume a natural-gas appliance can be converted to LPG. The manufacturer must permit it and the work, parts, commissioning and competence must match the appliance and setting.
If LPG may be escaping
Use the supplier or emergency route—not a routine certificate enquiry
Act only where it is safe
If safe, turn off the supply and appliances, extinguish flames, avoid electrical switches and ventilate the area. Contact the LPG supplier using the emergency details for the installation.
If there is fire, an uncontrolled release, immediate danger or any doubt, leave the area and call 999. Do not turn the supply back on until a competent person has dealt with the leak.
Upkeepone's ordinary enquiry route is not an emergency reporting service.
Postcode-qualified enquiries
Where Upkeepone can consider LPG work
Regular work covers London, Essex and Kent. Hertfordshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Sussex can be considered when the right LPG trade is available. Other UK areas are considered by request after the postcode, installation type, appliances and required competence have been checked.

Upkeepone can check the enquiry details and the relevant LPG trade before an appointment is agreed. Availability, price and the required competence depend on the actual installation—not only the fact that it uses LPG.
