Define the installation before asking one test to prove every part is safe
An LPG tightness test can provide useful point-in-time evidence for a stated section. It is not automatically a condition survey, appliance service, leak-location visit, whole-site certificate or guarantee of future integrity.
The direct answer
A test result belongs to the stated section, method, conditions and time
The engineer first identifies what is being tested and selects the applicable current procedure. The recorded result then answers the tightness question for that scope. It should not be enlarged into a claim about parts that were not included or safety characteristics that were not tested.
What starts and ends the section?
Record the cylinder valve, tank outlet, regulators, isolation points, meter if present, service pipework, installation pipework, appliance connections and any section excluded from the test.
What installation is it?
Fuel, operating and upstream pressure, pipe sizes, installation volume, premises type, meter arrangement, appliance state and pipework material can change the applicable standard and method.
What was actually concluded?
Ask for the test date, section, procedure or standard, relevant conditions, result, limitations, defects, actions taken and whether further isolation, diagnosis, repair or retesting is required.

Tightness is one question inside a larger LPG safety system
The gas tightness of a defined section
The test assesses the selected section against the applicable acceptance criteria under the recorded test conditions. It can support commissioning, post-work checks, routine testing or investigation of a suspected integrity problem where the chosen standard applies.
The precise location of a failure
An unsatisfactory result may trigger isolation and leak-location work. Finding the source can require controlled sectioning, safe detection methods, access and further diagnosis; the pressure result alone may not identify the joint or component.
Visual condition and maintenance assessment
A pipe can meet the tightness criteria on the day while still needing attention for corrosion, poor support, damage risk, unsuitable routing, inaccessible sections or overdue maintenance. HSE states that present-state tests do not assure longer-term service-pipe condition.
Appliances, flues or the complete premises
Combustion, burner operation, safety devices, ventilation, flues, extraction, storage, DSEAR, fire precautions and emergency arrangements require their own appropriate checks. Agree whether any are part of the same attendance.
The applicable standard depends on the installation
"LPG tightness test" is not one universal procedure
Size, pressure, location and boundary determine the route
IGEM's current public scope for UP/1B Edition 4 covers specified small LPG, LPG/air and natural-gas installations within stated pressure, bore, meter-capacity and installation-volume limits. It lists several situations where tightness testing may apply, but explicitly places LPG service pipework outside that standard.
IGEM's UP/1 route covers wider industrial and commercial pipework, including LPG pipework from the bulk storage vessel or cylinder valve within its scope. Other settings—such as caravans, boats, catering units, unusual processes or specialist meter installations—can use different standards or documented procedures.
The customer does not need to diagnose the standard. Supply accurate installation information so the proposed competent person can confirm in writing which section and procedure the quotation covers.
Reasons for requesting the test
Tell the engineer what changed, failed or needs to be recorded
Commissioning and post-work evidence
State what was installed, extended, replaced, re-used or uprated; who completed the work; which sections were opened; and whether purging, commissioning or appliance work is also required.
Explain how the installation became depressurised
Provide the events, isolation point, affected section, supplier information and any work already carried out. Complete loss of pressure can change the required testing and purging sequence before use resumes.
Separate emergency response from diagnosis
If there is a current smell, detector indication, damaged pipe or uncontrolled release, use the supplier or emergency route. A planned appointment can follow only after immediate danger is controlled.
Name the duty, contract or document
Explain whether the request comes from a landlord, insurer, supplier, workplace procedure, previous report, handover, vacancy, event organiser or competent-person recommendation, and provide the actual wording.
Testing is not a substitute for looking

A pass is not a promise about tomorrow
HSE says LPG service pipework should be regularly inspected and maintained, whether above or below ground. A competent person should review its state and establish when it should next be inspected. HSE also notes that tests investigating the state of pipework at the time cannot give assurance about its longer-term condition.
For landlords, HSE recommends asking the Gas Safe registered engineer to test the whole gas system for soundness and visually examine installation pipework as far as reasonably practicable. That recommendation illustrates why the pressure result and the condition examination should be stated as two elements, not treated as identical.
Buried metallic pipework, corrosion, damage, poor protection and uncertain ownership can require specialist investigation or replacement decisions beyond an ordinary tightness test.
Current smell, detector alarm or visible damage
Do not wait for a routine tightness-test appointment
A published IGEM meter-installation standard states that a gas smell or detector indication is unacceptable even when a tightness-test result is satisfactory. Treat the real warning, not the paperwork, as the immediate issue.
Keep people away from danger, avoid flames and electrical switches where this can be done safely, and follow the LPG supplier's displayed emergency instructions. For fire, an uncontrolled release, immediate danger or doubt, evacuate and call 999.

"Pressure-test our LPG" does not reveal whether the job concerns a cylinder-fed appliance, small installation, bulk-tank service pipe, commercial plant, catering trailer, caravan, meter installation, post-repair test or live leak investigation. The details below help route the request before attendance is agreed.
Ask what the written result will contain
A useful record prevents a narrow result being mistaken for whole-site approval
Site, installation and tested section
Record the address, fuel, supply arrangement, ownership handover, start and end isolation points, connected or isolated equipment and any part deliberately left outside the test.
Applicable standard and test basis
Record the procedure or standard used, relevant installation classification, date, test medium and the conditions or assumptions needed to interpret the result without publishing unsafe DIY instructions.
Result, observation and exclusions
State whether the section met the applicable criterion, any smell or detector observation, access limitation, inaccessible pipework, untested equipment and whether the result relates only to tightness.
Isolation, diagnosis, repair or retest
Record unsafe action, defects, person informed, repair recommendation, parts or access needed, retesting, purging or commissioning requirement and whether normal use was restored.
Match competence to the test and premises
LPG registration must cover the actual installation and work
Where the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations apply, use a Gas Safe registered business and verify the attending engineer's current ID-card categories for LPG, the appliances, installation and work. Registration for one gas category or setting does not automatically cover another.
Industrial, agricultural or specialist process installations can use a different competent-person route. Larger, higher-pressure or unusual systems may need a responsible engineer to develop a site-specific testing and purging procedure. Ask the proposed provider to state its competence evidence, applicable standard, scope and limitations before shutdown is arranged.
