A new heater starts with the right installation plan

Electric heater installation

Replacing an old heater or adding warmth to another room? Check the heater, position and electrical supply before the fitting is arranged.

Upkeepone handles enquiries for electric room-heater installation and replacement. Tell us what you want fitted, where it will go and the postcode so we can confirm the work, quotation and suitable engineer.

Priority areas: London, Essex and Kent. Already have a heater that has stopped working? Use our electric heating repairs page.

Your installation enquiry

Request an installation callback

Include your postcode, heater type and number of units. Tell us whether this is a new position or a replacement, and whether you have already bought the equipment.

Our team will be in touch as soon as possible to discuss your needs.

Sending an enquiry does not confirm an appointment. Equipment, electrical work and attendance need to be checked first.

Replacement, extra room or several units

Tell us what you want to install

A fixed room heater, storage heater and electric boiler are different jobs. Describe the equipment and intended use first; we can then check whether the proposed installation is within scope.

Replace an existing room heater

Send details of the old and proposed units, including whether the new heater will stay in the same position. A change in size, mounting or electrical rating can affect the work.

Add a heater to a room

Describe the room, preferred location and how you use it. Say whether there is already a heating connection nearby; the electrician will assess what the new installation needs.

Replace storage heaters

Give the number of units, approximate age and proposed replacements. The electrical supply, tariff, handling and removal arrangements need checking before a visit is agreed.

Panel heaters, electric radiators and electric towel rails have different product instructions and mounting requirements. Share the exact model rather than assuming that every unit can be fitted in the same way.

Installing a different heating system?

For a boiler feeding radiators, see the existing electric boiler installation page. For heating within a floor, use underfloor heating installation. Identify heat pumps, water heaters and other specialist equipment clearly so the required service can be checked.

Before buying or fixing a position

Choose the heater around the room and its use

The room size, insulation, heat loss and heating schedule matter when selecting a heater. A product’s purchase price or a broad efficiency claim does not tell you what it will cost to run in your property.

Heater and controls

Explain whether the room is used all day or for short periods, and which controls you need. If you have selected a product, send its specification and installation instructions before booking where possible.

Mounting and surroundings

Identify the proposed wall or floor position, wall construction if known, furniture and curtains nearby, and whether it is a bathroom or other wet area. The product’s clearances and location suitability need checking.

Changing storage heaters needs extra planning

Storage-heater choice involves room needs, charging arrangements and electricity tariff. Confirm the supply requirements with the installer and tariff or meter questions with your energy supplier. Old units are heavy; do not open or move them yourself. Flag old or damaged equipment so specialist removal risks can be assessed.

Energy Saving Trust: storage-heater choice and replacement

Confirm who will supply the heater and controls. If you are buying them yourself, agree suitability first and check responsibility for delivery, missing fittings and product warranty queries.

The connection is part of the job

Can the existing electrical supply be used?

The electrician needs to assess the proposed heater’s load, the circuit and connection, protective measures and relevant earthing and bonding. An existing outlet or the fact that the old heater worked does not confirm suitability for a new unit.

Moving a heater, increasing the load or adding several units may change the wiring and circuit requirements. Any additional work should be explained and priced before it proceeds. Do not remove outlet covers, alter wiring or bypass protection to prepare for the installation.

In England, a new circuit is notifiable under Part P for work within its scope. The location and work proposed affect the requirements, so ask the installer to confirm the correct Building Regulations process. Do not assume that every heater replacement needs notification.

What should the installation quotation include?

A useful quote distinguishes fitting a suitable heater to an assessed connection from supplying equipment, changing a circuit or removing a heavy old unit. Confirm the work included and how any findings during assessment will be handled.

Equipment and fitting

  • Heater and controls, or fitting customer-supplied equipment
  • Number of units and mounting positions
  • Fixings, labour and electrical connection
  • Control setup and explanation

Other work and charges

  • Any wiring, circuit or protective-device changes
  • Inspection, testing and applicable certification
  • Old-heater removal, disposal and specialist handling
  • VAT, travel, access and making good

Tell us about stairs, restricted parking, occupied rooms and landlord or managing-agent approval. Agree any heater shutdown or cooling arrangements with the installer; do not dismantle old equipment in advance.

If the existing heater is faulty and you have not decided to replace it, start with an electric heating repair enquiry. An assessment can help establish the problem before replacement is commissioned.

Testing, paperwork and using the controls

Agree the inspection, testing and certification for the electrical work. A new circuit needs an Electrical Installation Certificate. Suitable minor additions or alterations without a new circuit may use a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. The installer should identify the appropriate record for the actual scope.

For notifiable work, the relevant Building Regulations compliance process is separate from the electrical installation certificate. Requirements differ across the UK; work outside England needs its own local check.

Keep a practical handover record

  • Heater model and manufacturer instructions
  • What was fitted and which electrical work was carried out
  • Applicable electrical and Building Regulations records
  • How to use the timer, thermostat and any charging settings
  • Confirmed product and workmanship terms
  • Who to contact with a question after the work

An installation certificate records the electrical work undertaken. A periodic report on the wider installation is a separate service; do not treat a whole-property EICR as automatically included in a heater fitting quotation.

Electric heater installation FAQs

Can I use the existing connection for a replacement electric heater?

That needs checking against the new heater and the existing electrical installation. A connection used by the old unit is not proof that it suits the replacement. Share the proposed model and rating, and explain whether it is staying in the same position. Any circuit, connection or protection changes should be identified and agreed before installation.

Can you fit a heater I have already bought?

Tell us the full model, electrical rating and whether the fittings and installation instructions are available. We will check the requested work before accepting it. Confirm responsibility for supplying the heater, checking deliveries and handling product warranty issues; do not assume these are included in the fitting price.

What should I check before replacing a storage heater?

Check the proposed model, room needs, electricity tariff and supply arrangements with the appropriate installer and energy supplier. Storage heaters are heavy and need the correct electrical connection. Do not dismantle or move the old heater yourself. Tell us its approximate age and condition so removal and any specialist precautions can be assessed.

What paperwork should I receive after electric heater installation?

Ask which electrical certificate applies to the agreed work and keep it with the heater instructions. New circuit work needs an Electrical Installation Certificate; suitable minor additions or alterations without a new circuit may use a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. Where work is notifiable in England, the Building Regulations compliance process also needs to be addressed. The installer should explain the requirements for your job.

What affects the price of electric heater installation?

The number and type of heaters, mounting position, electrical supply and any additional wiring affect the quotation. Ask whether it includes the heater, controls, labour, testing, certification, old-unit removal, VAT and travel. Wall repairs, specialist removal or further electrical work may need a separate price. Compare quotes for the same agreed scope.

Where do you consider electric heater installation enquiries?
