Electrical installation enquiries

Socket installation and replacement

Need an extra socket, a replacement outlet or a point moved? Tell us where the work is, what you want changed and what you know about the existing wiring.

We will review the postcode, installation, access and job details to confirm the suitable service route, quotation basis and engineer availability before arranging attendance.

Describe the socket work

Request a socket-work callback

Include your full postcode, property type, socket location, whether it is new or a replacement, and any access or timing limits. Do not remove a socket cover to take a photograph.

Our team will be in touch as soon as possible to discuss your needs.

What socket work do you need?

A like-for-like replacement, an additional outlet and a new circuit involve different checks and amounts of work. Explain the result you need; the electrician can assess the existing installation and confirm what the job includes.

Add an extra socket

Enquire about adding a wall socket where you regularly rely on extension leads or adaptors. Whether it can be added to an existing circuit depends on the wiring, circuit arrangement, protection, proposed position and intended load.

Replace or change an outlet

Describe a broken, loose or outdated socket, or ask about changing the fitting style. A replacement does not by itself establish that the wiring behind it is sound; the condition and scope should be assessed.

Move or reposition a socket

Moving a point can involve altering fixed wiring and opening a wall, floor or ceiling. Tell us the current and proposed positions and whether access is available from the other side.

USB or a different socket type

Name the fitting you have in mind, such as a USB outlet, and share a product link or photograph if you have selected one. Suitability depends on the installation and the specific fitting.

Workplace or commercial sockets

For an office, shop or other workplace, describe the equipment, socket positions, distribution board if known, business hours and any permitted shutdowns. Trunking, containment or a new circuit can change the scope.

A socket that is not working

If power has failed, a breaker trips or more than one point is affected, this may need fault diagnosis before a replacement is considered. Use the electrical fault-finding route or describe the symptoms in your enquiry.

What to send before we price the work

Socket fitting prices vary with the installation and finish. These details help us avoid treating a simple replacement like a new circuit or assuming that wall repairs are included.

Do not open or work on the fitting. Photograph only what can be seen safely from outside. If a socket is hot, scorched, sparking or making a crackling sound, stop using it and tell us. Do not touch exposed wires or repeatedly reset a circuit that may be unsafe.

What affects the installation and final price?

Existing circuit

The electrician needs to establish whether the proposed point can be supplied from an appropriate existing circuit or whether additional wiring or a new circuit is required.

Cable route and building fabric

Surface-mounted routes, chasing, access beneath floors and work through masonry or finished surfaces take different time and may require separate making-good or decoration.

Access and site use

Occupied rooms, tenants, furniture, trading hours, permits, isolation windows and specialist access can affect how work is planned.

Materials and finish

Confirm whether the quote includes the socket fitting, its specification and any selected finish. If you supply a fitting, share its details in advance.

Inspection and testing

Testing appropriate to the work and installation is part of completing electrical work safely. The required certificate or record depends on the work undertaken and applicable requirements.

Extra work

Consumer-unit changes, fault investigation, remedial work, replacement parts, building work and decoration are separate unless they appear in the written scope.

UK electrical safety

Building Regulations and electrical records

For a dwelling in England, Government guidance distinguishes additional power points or alterations to existing circuits, which usually do not need Building Control notification, from work such as a new circuit or electrical work around a bath or shower, where notification may apply unless an eligible competent-person route is used. Electrical work must still meet the applicable safety standards. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own building-control arrangements.

Ask before work begins which circuit or installation is included, whether Building Regulations notification applies, who will arrange it where required and what test results, certificate or other record you will receive. The answer depends on the work and the location.

Upkeepone’s qualified engineers carry out electrical work. NAPIT or NICEIC registration applies where relevant to the agreed work and assigned engineer. Ask us to confirm the route for your installation before booking.

From enquiry to completion

How a socket-work enquiry is handled

1. Describe the job

Send the postcode, premises details, desired socket change and photographs that can be taken safely.

2. Check the scope

We review the likely circuit, access, installation, timing and appropriate engineer availability.

3. Agree the quote

The quotation sets out the work and price basis. Ask what is included, what may require another visit and which records will be supplied.

4. Complete and record

The engineer carries out the agreed work and any required testing. Additional tasks are discussed and authorised separately.

Common questions

Socket installation FAQs

Can I have an extra socket installed on an existing circuit?

Often it may be possible, but the circuit, existing wiring, protective devices, intended load, socket position and installation condition all need to be considered. Send the postcode and a description or safe photograph so the job can be scoped.

How much does socket installation cost?

The price depends on whether the job is a like-for-like replacement, an additional point on an existing circuit or a new circuit, as well as cable routes, access, socket type, testing and any making good. Upkeepone will confirm the quotation basis before work is arranged.

Can you replace a damaged plug socket?

You can enquire about a socket replacement. If a socket is hot, scorched, sparking, cracked or making a crackling noise, stop using it and describe the warning signs. Do not remove the faceplate or attempt a repair.

Can a socket be moved to another wall?

A move may involve extending or altering fixed wiring and opening the wall or floor. The route, construction, access, finish and any decorating or making-good work need to be agreed separately in the quotation.

Does adding a socket need Building Regulations approval?

In England, Government guidance lists additional power points or alterations to existing circuits as work that usually does not need notification, while a new circuit and work around a bath or shower may need notification unless an applicable competent-person route is used. Work must still meet safety standards. Requirements differ across the UK, so confirm the exact job and location before work starts.

Can you install sockets in a shop or office?

Describe the premises, equipment, proposed socket positions, operating hours, access and any shutdown limits. Commercial work may involve different supplies, distribution boards, trunking or containment and is scoped around the installation and site requirements.

Which areas do you cover for socket installation?

London, Essex and Kent are the priority areas for regular enquiries. Hertfordshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Sussex are also covered; other UK areas may be considered by request. Attendance depends on the postcode, installation, access, travel and appropriately qualified engineer availability.
