Electrical work for homes and businesses
Light switch installation and replacement
Need an existing light switch replaced, a different type fitted or a new switch position considered? Tell us what you would like changed, how many switches are involved and the property postcode. We will review the details and confirm the next step and whether an appropriately qualified engineer is available.
What light-switch work do you need?
A clear description helps us understand the job before arranging attendance. This page is for light-switch enquiries; sockets and wider electrical faults have their own service routes.
Replace an existing switch
Tell us where it is and whether you want a like-for-like replacement or a different style.
Add or move a switch
Describe the current position and where you would like it. A new location may need additional work to the existing installation.
Dimmer, timer or smart switch
Share the make and model if known. Compatibility depends on the product and installation, so it must be checked before the work is confirmed.
What to include in your enquiry
A few details help us assess the request and explain what we need next.
- The property postcode and the room or area.
- How many switches are involved and whether you want one replaced, added, moved or assessed.
- The switch type or product details, if known, and any access considerations.
You do not need to identify the wiring. Please do not remove a switch plate or touch electrical parts to take a photo. A short description or photo of the switch front can help us start the conversation.
How a light-switch enquiry works
Send the details
Tell us the postcode, switch type if known, number of switches and outcome you want.
We review the job
We may ask for more information to understand the existing arrangement, access and work involved.
Confirm the next step
The scope and quotation basis are discussed before attendance is arranged. Any wider work should be explained and agreed first.
What can affect the quotation?
The switch type, number of controls, whether you want an existing switch changed or a new position, the installation condition and site access can all affect the work. A switch enquiry does not automatically include socket work, consumer-unit replacement, an inspection report, making good or decoration.
Competence and electrical safety
Electrical work should be carried out by someone competent for the task. Upkeepone’s engineers are qualified and registered with NAPIT and NICEIC where applicable; this depends on the engineer and the work involved. The competence needed varies with the complexity of the task.
For certain electrical work in dwellings in England, Building Regulations requirements may apply. Requirements depend on the work and location; England-specific guidance does not set rules for every UK nation or mean every switch change follows the same notification route.
Read the HSE guidance on electrical work and competence and, for England, GOV.UK Approved Document P.
Areas we cover
London, Essex and Kent are priority areas for regular enquiries. Hertfordshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Sussex are also covered. Other UK areas may be considered by request. Attendance depends on the postcode, installation, access, travel and availability of an appropriately qualified engineer.
Related electrical services
For socket installation or replacement, see our separate socket installation page. If the issue appears to be part of a wider electrical fault, use the electrician enquiry route. Browse the electrical services directory for other work.
Light-switch installation FAQs
Can you replace an existing light switch?
Send the postcode, number of switches and a short description of what you want changed. The switch type and existing arrangement need to be checked before the job can be scoped.
Can you add or move a light switch?
Tell us where the switch is now and where you would like it. A new position may involve more than changing the switch itself, so the work needs assessment before a quotation is confirmed.
Can you fit a dimmer or smart light switch?
Share the make and model if known. Compatibility depends on the product and existing installation, so it should be checked before the work is confirmed.
What should I send for a quote?
Include the postcode, number of switches, room or area, type of change requested, access details and product information if available. Do not remove a switch plate or handle wiring to provide more detail.
Do you install or repair sockets on this page?
This page is for light-switch work. Use the separate socket installation page for socket work, or the electrician enquiry route for a wider electrical fault.
Which areas do you cover?
London, Essex and Kent are priority areas. Hertfordshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Sussex are also covered. Other UK areas may be considered by request, subject to postcode, installation, access, travel and appropriately qualified engineer availability.
