How one fuel changes state

LPG is stored compactly as liquid and used by appliances as vapour

Keeping LPG under pressure allows a useful amount of fuel to be carried in a cylinder or held in a tank. The space above the liquid contains vapour. As vapour is drawn off, more liquid changes into gas, subject to the fuel, container, temperature and rate of demand.

A regulator controls the supply pressure delivered to the installation. Cylinder type, changeover equipment, regulator capacity, pipework and appliance demand must be considered together. A visually similar connector does not prove that a cylinder or regulator is suitable.

The container must be suitable, correctly positioned and protected. Bulk-tank ownership and maintenance responsibilities should be confirmed with the supplier rather than assumed.

These components control and isolate the supply. Type, capacity, age, condition and compatibility matter; repeated resets or improvised connections are not a repair.

Routing, support, material, joints, protection and condition all form part of the system. Buried or concealed pipework may require records and a separate maintenance plan.

The data plate and manufacturer instructions establish whether the appliance is designed or approved for LPG and which parts, settings and commissioning procedure apply.

Appliances need the air and flue or extraction arrangement specified for their design and setting. Do not block ventilation or use outdoor equipment in an enclosed space.

A service record, landlord safety record, CP44-style catering document, caravan inspection and conversion commissioning evidence answer different questions.

Fuel conversion is engineering work

Natural-gas equipment is not automatically suitable for LPG

Natural gas and LPG use different supply arrangements and may require different injectors, regulators, pressures and appliance settings. A conversion should only proceed where the manufacturer permits it and the correct conversion kit, instructions and competent commissioning are available.

An online certificate cannot make an incompatible appliance safe. Physical work and tests must take place where required, and the engineer's current competence must match LPG, the appliance and the domestic, commercial, catering, caravan or other setting.

If safe, turn off the supply, extinguish flames, avoid electrical switches and ventilate the area. Contact the LPG supplier using the emergency details for the installation.

If there is fire, an uncontrolled release, immediate danger or any doubt, leave the area and call 999. Because LPG vapour can settle in low places, do not enter drains, pits, basements or other confined areas to investigate.

What does LPG stand for?
LPG stands for liquefied petroleum gas. UK public-health guidance describes it as a highly flammable gas made primarily from propane, butane or a mixture of both. It is compressed and stored as a liquid in suitable cylinders or tanks, then returns to vapour for use.
Is LPG the same as natural gas?
No. LPG is normally propane, butane or a mixture supplied from cylinders or a bulk tank. Mains natural gas is mostly methane and arrives through the gas network. Appliances, injectors, regulators, pressures and commissioning must match the actual fuel.
What is the difference between propane and butane?
Both are forms of LPG, but they have different vapour-pressure and low-temperature characteristics. The correct fuel is determined by the appliance, regulator, setting and manufacturer instructions. Do not swap cylinders or regulators merely because the connector appears to fit.
Why is LPG stored as a liquid?
Compressing LPG into liquid form allows a useful quantity of fuel to be stored and transported in a comparatively small cylinder or tank. When the pressure is reduced through the correct supply arrangement, liquid LPG produces vapour for the appliance.
Is LPG heavier than air?
Yes. HSE warns that escaping LPG vapour is heavier than air and can collect in low places such as drains, pits and basements. This is one reason ventilation, storage position, pipework condition and safe emergency action matter.
Why does LPG have a strong smell?
LPG itself is odourless, so an odorant is added to help most people detect a leak at a low concentration. A suspected smell must be treated as a possible escape of gas rather than used as a test of whether an installation is safe.
Can a natural-gas appliance run on LPG?
Only when the appliance manufacturer permits conversion and the correct parts, settings, regulator, pressure and competent commissioning are available. Some appliances are not convertible. Never alter injectors, regulators or gas settings yourself.
Who can work on an LPG appliance?
Gas work within the scope of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered business or engineer who is competent for that work. Check the engineer's current ID-card categories for the fuel, appliance and setting; a natural-gas category alone does not prove LPG competence.
Does every LPG user need the same certificate?
No. A landlord, mobile caterer, commercial premises, static caravan and owner-occupied home can require different inspection records or service outputs. State who is asking for the paperwork, how the installation is used, every appliance and the exact deadline before booking.
What should I do if I smell LPG?
Treat it as a possible leak. If it is safe, extinguish flames, avoid electrical switches, turn off the supply and ventilate the area. Contact the LPG supplier using the installation's emergency details. If there is fire, an uncontrolled release or immediate danger, leave and call 999. Do not restore the supply until a competent person confirms it is safe.
