Electrical work for homes and business premises
Electricians for repairs, installations and planned work
Tell Upkeepone what needs attention, where the property is and when access is possible. We will check the work and suitable engineer availability before an appointment is agreed.
Whether a circuit keeps tripping or you are planning new fittings, a useful enquiry starts with the problem or change you need—not a technical diagnosis.
Tell us about the electrical job
Include the postcode, property type, what is affected or being changed, and any access restrictions. Mention an urgent problem at the start of your message.
Start with the work you need
A fault or damaged fitting
Describe the symptoms, when they started and which rooms or equipment are affected. A fault-finding visit may be needed before the cause and repair can be established.
An installation or alteration
For sockets, lighting, consumer units, cookers or wiring changes, explain what you want to add or replace. Include the equipment details and any plans you already have.
An inspection report
If a landlord, managing agent or business has asked for an EICR, choose the report route for the premises. Those pages explain inspection scope, prices and the reporting process.
Make the visit easier to plan
Send the practical details
- The full postcode, flat or unit number and whether the property is a home or business.
- The fault, fitting or proposed work, plus any previous findings or equipment model.
- Who can provide access, parking restrictions and any time when power cannot be interrupted.
- Your preferred dates and any genuine deadline.
Agree the scope and charges
Before accepting a visit, check the attendance or assessment charge, the work included, materials, VAT and any exclusions. Ask how additional work will be quoted if investigation reveals a different problem.
For business premises, identify who can authorise work and agree any necessary shutdown. For a rented property, clarify the landlord or agent’s instructions and the access contact.
If you suspect something is unsafe, keep people away and switch it off only if it is safe to do so. Contact a competent electrician. Do not open covers to investigate. Read HSE’s electrical safety advice.
Check competence for the particular job
Ask about relevant training and experience for the work being requested. Specialist equipment and inspection work may need different expertise from a straightforward fitting replacement. HSE explains that competence must relate to the type of electrical work involved.
Where a contractor claims registration, check the business name, current record and registered scope. A link to a scheme’s homepage does not verify the person attending your property. You can ask Upkeepone about the proposed contractor before agreeing to the work.
Which Wiring Regulations edition applies?
BS 7671 is the UK standard for electrical installations. The IET’s current published version is BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, part of the 18th Edition. Its edition checker confirms that the preceding version incorporating Amendment 3:2024 remains valid until 15 October 2026. The applicable requirements should be established for the work being designed or carried out.
Standards reference checked on 7 September 2026.
Electrical service areas
Priority areas
London, Essex and Kent are the priority areas for regular electrical enquiries.
Also covered
We also cover Hertfordshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Sussex.
Elsewhere by request
Other UK locations are considered individually. Send the postcode and job details for a coverage check.
Attendance depends on the postcode, installation, access, travel and availability of an appropriately qualified engineer. Coverage does not guarantee attendance at a particular address or time.
Questions before booking an electrician
How much will an electrician’s visit cost?
The price depends on the work, location, access, time needed and any materials. A fault may need investigation before the repair can be priced. Ask what the initial attendance covers, whether further work needs a separate quote and the total payable including VAT.
Can I get a quote from photographs?
Photographs and a clear description can help explain the job, but concealed wiring or a fault may still need an on-site assessment. Take photographs only from a safe position; do not remove electrical covers. Ask whether an assessment visit is chargeable before booking.
Can you send an electrician urgently?
Call with the postcode and explain the problem. Attendance and timing must be confirmed for the particular job; sending an enquiry does not reserve a visit or guarantee an immediate response.
Do I need a repair visit or an EICR?
A repair visit addresses a reported problem or agreed work. An EICR is a condition report following inspection and testing of the fixed electrical installation. If you have been asked for a landlord or business report, use the relevant EICR service page so the inspection is quoted separately.
What should I check before agreeing to electrical work?
Confirm who will carry out the job, their competence for that work, what the quote includes and the paperwork to be supplied. Check any claimed scheme registration against the contractor’s own current record and the relevant work scope. Ask for the applicable insurance and guarantee terms where these matter to your booking.
Ready to discuss the job?
Send the details once you know the property postcode and the work you want assessed. If you already have a quote or previous report, mention its reference in your enquiry.
