The five-circuit starting price gives you a basis for budgeting. A larger installation, extra distribution boards or restrictions on testing can require a different quotation. We check these details before agreeing the job.

Useful information includes the previous report, the approximate number of boards and whether the building has changed since its last inspection. You can still enquire if you do not know how many circuits there are.

Fitting the inspection into the working day

Agree a time when the required testing can be carried out

Some electrical tests need the relevant circuits to be isolated. Explain which activities can pause, who can authorise that interruption and whether any equipment needs an organised shutdown or restart.

During normal opening hours

Identify a suitable period and the areas that will be occupied. A quiet shop floor does not necessarily mean that office systems, kitchen equipment or shared supplies can be switched off.

Before opening or after closing

An evening or early visit may suit the business, subject to engineer availability and the quotation. Arrange a responsible contact, building access and any security or permit requirements for the whole visit.

During a planned closure

If you have a maintenance day or a gap between bookings, give us the proposed window. Allow time for the inspection itself and discuss what happens if access problems or defects affect the programme.

Tell us about every source of power. Declare generators, solar panels, battery storage or an uninterruptible power supply as well as the mains supply. The electrician needs this information to assess the work, isolation arrangements and any specialist involvement.

A simple plan for your site contact

1. Describe the building

Give the full address and any unit, floor or building reference. Mention separate workshops, storage buildings or outdoor supplies that you want included. An address alone may not identify the full installation.

2. Confirm the arrangements

Check the quotation, the intended inspection areas, permitted interruption times and who will meet the engineer. For gated sites or business parks, include the correct entrance, parking arrangements and any induction requirements.

3. Make the agreed areas accessible

Have the keys and existing records ready. Arrange access to rooms containing boards and make sure the person attending can reach the relevant controls safely. Only share photographs of closed boards or schedules you can reach without removing covers.

4. Agree who receives the findings

Identify the report recipient and anyone who needs to authorise follow-up work. Ask for the expected report-delivery arrangements before booking, particularly if a renewal, audit or insurer deadline is approaching.

After the inspection

Use the EICR to decide what needs attention

An Electrical Installation Condition Report records the assessed condition of the existing fixed wiring. Its inspection schedules, test results and observations need to be read alongside the stated extent and any limitations.

Check that the address, building references and inspected areas make sense to the person maintaining the property. A locked room or excluded supply should not disappear from the maintenance plan simply because a report has been issued.

Keep the EICR and any later investigation or repair documents together. They help a facilities team, landlord or subsequent contractor see what was found and what action followed.

Keeping inspections up to date

Review the next inspection date against current conditions

The previous EICR is a useful starting point for your maintenance programme. Consider its recommendations alongside the way the premises are used now, their condition and any alterations or additional equipment.

Workplace electrical duties under the Electricity at Work Regulations are about maintaining systems to prevent danger, so far as reasonably practicable. They do not impose an identical annual or five-year EICR timetable on every Kent business.

Ask a competent electrician to advise on the appropriate interval. Check any lease, insurance or sector requirements too. HSE’s workplace electrical safety guidance explains maintenance and competence; its Electricity at Work Regulations memorandum provides the detail.

Questions about planning the work

Booking a commercial electrical inspection in Kent

Can the EICR be arranged during our maintenance shutdown?

Tell us the proposed dates, the hours available and what other contractors will be doing. We need to check access, isolation responsibilities and whether the inspection can be completed within that window. A shutdown date is not reserved until the scope, attendance and quotation have been agreed.

What happens if a room cannot be opened on the day?

Let the electrician know as soon as the access problem becomes apparent. The report must accurately describe the parts inspected and any limitations. If an agreed area cannot be checked, discuss the effect on the report and whether a further visit is needed. Return attendance and any additional charges should be agreed.

Can testing be spread over more than one visit?

It may be possible to plan the inspection in stages, depending on the installation and safe access. Agree the overall extent, the order of work, reporting arrangements and charges first. Testing part of a building does not establish the condition of areas or circuits that have not yet been assessed.

Does an older distribution board automatically need replacing?

Its age alone does not decide the outcome. The electrician assesses its condition, protective measures and any defects or risks identified during the inspection. Existing equipment is not automatically unsafe simply because standards have changed. Follow the observations and advice for the actual installation; a replacement cannot be ruled in or out from a photograph alone.

We have an unsatisfactory report from another firm. What should we send?

Provide the complete report, including the observations, inspection and test schedules, and any evidence of work completed since it was issued. Tell us about outstanding safety advice and the deadline you are working towards. We can then assess the enquiry and advise what information or further attendance is needed before quoting the appropriate work.

How can I compare two commercial EICR quotations?

Check that both cover the same supplies, boards, circuits and premises areas. Compare the allowed access and testing hours, VAT, report provision, limitations and any travel or parking costs. A cheaper headline figure may describe a smaller scope. Ask each provider to explain how extra work, remedials and repeat visits would be charged.

Can I ask about emergency lighting or fire alarms at the same time?

Yes, include the other checks you need in the enquiry and share any existing records. Each system needs an appropriate scope and suitably qualified engineer. We will need to confirm whether the work can be coordinated; one commercial EICR does not replace emergency-lighting or fire-alarm inspection and maintenance records.
