Check who will attend

Use the Gas Safe Register to verify the business and attending engineer. Check the photograph, licence number and expiry date rather than relying on a badge copied onto a website.

2. Relevant competence

Match LPG and the setting

Confirm the engineer's current record or ID card covers LPG and the proposed appliance, property or commercial setting. Natural-gas competence alone is not enough.

3. Written scope

Match the actual job

Permitted work

The reverse lists the categories the engineer is qualified to undertake. Check the fuel and relevant appliances or work rather than accepting a verbal "yes, I do LPG".

Quote and paperwork

Retain the written quotation, engineer or business details, expected record, invoice and any limits noted during inspection. Registration does not turn an unclear quotation into the right job.

HSE says customers are responsible for checking that a person is registered and qualified for the work. It also states that a registered engineer must not knowingly sign off gas work completed by an unregistered person.

Confirm which components belong to the LPG supplier and where the requested work starts. Tank equipment, external supply pipework and building appliances may involve different responsibilities.

A postcode and the words "LPG job" do not reveal the competence required. Clear photographs and data help scope a non-emergency enquiry, but they cannot prove that an installation is safe.

Inspection or certificate

Check the premises or unit, appliances and supply included; the record supplied; whether travel or access is included; and what happens if defects prevent a satisfactory outcome.

Installation, service or repair

Check labour, materials, appliance or component specification, commissioning, disposal, exclusions, proposed dates and whether additional faults require a revised quotation.

Commercial or mobile work

Confirm every appliance and operating setting, any ventilation or interlock scope, site induction, trading deadline, paperwork recipient and whether the unit must be ready in a fixed location.

Do not buy on one headline number

A lower figure can cover fewer appliances, omit paperwork, exclude travel or assume a different job. Compare the written scope and competence before price.

If LPG may be escaping

Use the supplier or emergency route—not a routine installer search

Act only where it is safe

If safe, turn off the supply and appliances, extinguish flames, open doors and windows, and avoid electrical switches or anything that could ignite gas. Contact the LPG supplier.

If there is danger, fire, an uncontrolled release or any doubt, leave the area and call 999. Do not turn the supply back on until a competent person has dealt with the leak.

How do I find an LPG installer near me?
Start with the Gas Safe Register Find an Engineer service and search by postcode. Liquid Gas UK also provides a postcode search for LPG-trained installers. Before booking, check the attending engineer rather than only the business name, and confirm that the engineer's current card or online record covers LPG, the installation setting, the appliance and the work requested.
Can every Gas Safe registered engineer work on LPG?
No. Registration alone does not mean an engineer is qualified for every fuel, appliance or setting. HSE advises customers to check competence for the specific area of gas work. Confirm LPG and the relevant work categories on the back of the attending engineer's Gas Safe ID card or through the Gas Safe Register.
What should I check on a Gas Safe ID card?
Check the photograph, engineer name, seven-digit licence number and expiry date on the front. Check the permitted work categories on the back and make sure they cover LPG and the proposed appliance or installation. The Gas Safe Register can also be used to check the engineer's identity and qualifications.
Can an LPG installer sign off gas work completed by somebody unregistered?
Do not arrange unregistered gas work on the assumption that a registered engineer can approve it afterwards. HSE states that a Gas Safe registered engineer must fit and check a gas appliance and must not knowingly sign off gas work carried out by an unregistered person.
Do I need a different LPG engineer for mobile catering or a static caravan?
Potentially, yes. Competence must match the actual setting and work. Mobile catering, commercial catering, domestic property, static caravans, park homes and other leisure accommodation can require different LPG knowledge or work categories. Describe the unit and every appliance before an appointment is accepted.
Should I contact the LPG supplier about tank or supply equipment?
Yes when the enquiry concerns a bulk tank, supplier-owned fittings, delivery access or a suspected leak. Responsibility for parts of a bulk LPG installation can sit with the supplier, the property or business operator, or another party.
