UK fuel, appliance and safety comparison
Natural gas and LPG can power similar appliances but are not interchangeable fuels
Natural gas is mainly methane supplied through the network. LPG is mainly propane or butane stored in cylinders or tanks. The fuel changes the supply, pressure control, appliance setup, competence and emergency route.
The direct answer
The four differences that affect a real installation
Methane versus propane or butane
UK natural gas is primarily methane. LPG is primarily propane, butane or a mixture. Both are flammable fuels, but their physical properties and supply arrangements differ.
Network versus on-site fuel
Natural gas normally reaches a property through a meter and distribution pipe. LPG is delivered to cylinders or a bulk tank and requires on-site storage and pressure-control equipment.
Different fuel, pressure and parts
Injectors, regulators, operating pressure and commissioning settings must match the fuel. A natural-gas data plate does not prove LPG suitability, even if the appliance looks identical.
Different emergency contacts
HSE directs suspected natural-gas leaks to 0800 111 999 and suspected LPG leaks to the LPG supplier. Do not use an ordinary certificate enquiry to report either emergency.
Side-by-side comparison
Natural gas and LPG differ from supply point to emergency action
| Installation question | Natural gas | LPG |
|---|---|---|
| Principal fuel | Primarily methane. | Primarily propane, butane or a mixture. |
| Typical supply | Piped network, service pipe and meter. | Cylinder, cylinder bank or bulk storage tank supplied by road. |
| On-site pressure equipment | Network and meter arrangement appropriate to the installation. | Tank or cylinder valves, regulator stages and sometimes changeover equipment. |
| Vapour density | Methane is less dense than air and tends to rise, although ventilation and release conditions affect movement. | Vaporised LPG is heavier than air and can collect at low level, including drains, pits and basements. |
| Appliance suitability | Data plate, injectors and settings must confirm natural gas. | Data plate or approved conversion, injectors, regulator and settings must confirm the LPG fuel and pressure. |
| Engineer competence | Must match the natural-gas appliance and work category. | Must match LPG plus the appliance and setting, such as domestic, catering, leisure or commercial work. |
| Suspected leak | National Gas Emergency Service: 0800 111 999. | Contact the LPG supplier using the installation's emergency details. |
Map the supply before the appliance
The installation begins at a different boundary for each fuel
A natural-gas enquiry normally starts with the incoming service, emergency control and meter before following pipework to each appliance. An LPG enquiry starts with the cylinder or tank, ownership and supplier responsibilities, valves, regulator stages, changeover equipment and service pipework.
Those boundaries matter when allocating maintenance or repair. For example, a bulk LPG supplier may look after the tank and some fittings, while the site user retains responsibilities around siting, access, security and the wider installation. Confirm the contract and ownership rather than assuming.
Similar appearance is not compatibility
Why appliances cannot simply be moved from one fuel to the other
Injector and burner design
The quantity of gas and air delivered to the burner must suit the fuel and appliance. Incorrect injectors or settings can cause poor combustion, instability, overheating or dangerous carbon-monoxide production.
Regulation must match demand
LPG cylinder and tank arrangements require suitable pressure regulation and capacity. Improvised regulators, adapters or shared supplies can create pressure and performance problems.
Not every model is convertible
Check the exact model and serial number. Conversion needs manufacturer permission, the specified kit and instructions—not an assumption based on another appliance in the range.
Physical checks cannot be replaced online
Where conversion is permitted, the completed installation and appliance must be tested and commissioned for the new fuel by the correct competent route. A remotely issued document cannot substitute for that work.
Before requesting a fuel change
Separate the supply project from each appliance decision
Changing a property or unit from natural gas to LPG—or from LPG to a network supply—can involve the incoming supply, meter or tank, regulator, pipe sizing, appliances, flues, ventilation, commissioning and removal or isolation of redundant equipment.
Some appliances may be convertible, others may require replacement, and specialist or commercial equipment may require manufacturer involvement. Establish the whole inventory before agreeing cost, timescale or certification.
Compare the complete arrangement
Do not choose a fuel from a generic "cheaper" or "greener" claim
Price is site and contract specific
Compare the fuel unit, standing or account charges, cylinder or tank terms, delivery conditions, minimum use, contract period and exit arrangements using current written quotations.
Connection and conversion matter
Include any network connection, tank siting, trenching, pipework, regulator, appliance conversion or replacement, commissioning and removal costs—not only the advertised fuel unit.
Appliances determine consumption
Use the building or process demand, appliance efficiency, usage pattern, peak load and storage capacity. A statement about energy per unit does not by itself predict the final bill.
Define the comparison boundary
Both conventional fuels are fossil fuels. Ask for current product-specific emissions evidence covering the boundary that matters to the decision rather than relying on an unqualified headline.
Suspected gas escape
The safe action is urgent even though the contact route differs
Natural gas
If safe, extinguish flames, avoid electrical switches, open doors and windows and turn off the supply. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Do not restore the supply until the leak has been dealt with by a competent person.
LPG
If safe, extinguish flames, avoid electrical switches, ventilate and turn off the supply. Contact the LPG supplier using the emergency details for the installation.
Because LPG can collect at low level, do not enter drains, pits, basements or confined spaces to investigate.
For fire, an uncontrolled release, immediate danger or any doubt, leave the area and call 999. Upkeepone's ordinary enquiry route is not an emergency service.
Postcode-qualified enquiries
Where Upkeepone can consider LPG work
Regular work covers London, Essex and Kent. Hertfordshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Sussex can be considered when the right trade is available. Other UK areas are considered by request after the postcode, fuel, appliances, setting and required competence have been checked.
Continue with the correct owner page
Choose the fuel, setting and work you actually require
Start with the LPG hub
Choose the property, catering, caravan, commercial or appliance route and send the required paperwork wording.
Use the commercial gas route
Describe the premises, appliances, supply, use, maintenance history and inspection or repair needed.
Confirm manufacturer approval
Send the current and proposed fuel, appliance data plates, conversion instructions and supply proposal before arranging work.
Collect the evidence first
Use the booking checklist to photograph the safe, visible parts of the installation and identify the requester and deadline.
