UK Autogas and bottled LPG guide
The fuel family may be similar, but the container and filling system decide what is safe
Autogas, propane and butane are LPG products. That does not make a forecourt pump, a Calor exchange cylinder and a motorhome refillable installation interchangeable. Check the product, cylinder ownership, fill protection, regulator, appliances and approved use.
The direct answer
Petrol-station LPG and Calor bottled gas are related fuels supplied through different safety systems
Both are LPG
Autogas and Calor propane or butane belong to the liquefied petroleum gas family. LPG is the fuel category; Calor is one supplier brand.
Do not assume the same composition
Autogas may be propane, butane or a specified mixture. A bottled product is identified by its supplier label. The receiving equipment must be approved for the actual fuel.
The main safety difference
Vehicle tanks and permitted refillable systems are volume-filled with fill-limiting protection. Supplier exchange cylinders are inspected and weight-filled through an authorised plant route.
Pressure and vapour withdrawal matter
A vehicle tank, a fixed habitation system and an exchange cylinder can have different valves, withdrawal arrangements, regulators and approved uses. A physical adaptor does not prove compatibility.
System-by-system comparison
Identify the vessel before deciding where the LPG can come from
| Question | Forecourt Autogas | Calor exchange cylinder | Approved fixed refillable system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical purpose | Vehicle propulsion through an approved fuel system. | Labelled bottled LPG for supplier-approved domestic, leisure or commercial uses. | Vehicle propulsion or habitation appliances where the installed system explicitly permits it. |
| Filling route | Volume dispensed through a forecourt filling connector. | Filled by weight at a dedicated plant by the supplier or authorised contractor. | Filled only through the system's approved fixed connector and protection arrangement. |
| Public self-refill | Only into an allowed vehicle or installation, subject to site rules. | No. Exchange or return through an authorised stockist. | May be permitted when every installation and forecourt condition is met; verify before travelling. |
| Fill limiting | Part of the approved vehicle or refuelling system. | Controlled during authorised plant filling and cylinder inspection. | Requires the system's specified automatic overfill protection. |
| Can an adaptor make it suitable? | No. An adaptor only changes a connection. It cannot establish ownership, product suitability, safe fill level, valve condition, regulator pressure, appliance approval or forecourt permission. | ||
Why a Calor cylinder uses the exchange route
The cylinder remains part of the supplier's controlled filling system
Liquid Gas UK states that most branded cylinders remain the property of the gas supplier. They are filled by weight and must be filled at a dedicated plant by that supplier or its authorised filling contractor. Calor's own warning says its portable cylinders must not be refilled from Autogas equipment.
When a Calor cylinder is empty, use the authorised exchange or return route. The replacement process keeps cylinder inspection, product identity and filling controls within the supplier's system. Never decant LPG or use an adaptor to bypass it.
Do not convert an exchange cylinder at the pump
A screw-on filling adaptor does not create an approved refillable system
Stop before connecting
An adaptor cannot add the cylinder inspection, automatic overfill protection, fixed filling point, installation approval or product controls that a permitted refillable arrangement needs.
Overfilling can leave too little vapour space for thermal expansion. A damaged valve, unsuitable seal or wrong filling method can release LPG. Escaping LPG is highly flammable and its vapour can collect in low places.
Do not improvise because two products are both called LPG. Use the cylinder supplier's exchange or filling instructions and the forecourt operator's rules.
Motorhome, campervan and mobile-unit systems
Six facts must be clear before a refillable installation is used
Fixed tank or removable cylinder?
Identify whether the vessel is permanently installed, removable, supplier-owned or user-owned. Similar appearance does not establish the permitted filling route.
Propulsion, habitation or both?
Confirm whether LPG feeds the engine, cooking, heating, hot water or several systems and whether the vessel manufacturer permits each use.
Overfill prevention and fixed point
Provide the system documentation, fill-limiting device and external filling connector. Do not substitute a loose adaptor for the specified installation.
Regulator and appliance pressure
Habitation and catering appliances normally need a correctly regulated vapour supply. A propulsion tank or liquid outlet must never be assumed suitable.
Tank, pipework, locker and ventilation
Declare the mounting, protection, isolation, regulator, pipework, hoses, gas-tight locker or enclosure, drop vents and every appliance.
The operator controls the dispenser
Even a purpose-made system can be refused under a site's policy. Check current availability and permission; do not argue from an adaptor or an old station listing.
Appliances need the correct supply
A BBQ, catering appliance or heater cannot be connected to pump LPG by assumption
Before LPG reaches an appliance, the installation must provide the manufacturer-specified fuel, vapour supply, pressure, capacity, isolation and ventilation. An Autogas vehicle tank may have a liquid-withdrawal arrangement for the engine; that is not a substitute for a designed appliance supply.
For mobile catering, declare every appliance, cylinder or tank, regulator, pipework, restraint, locker, ventilation, trading setting and requested paperwork. For caravans or property systems, state the accommodation type, use and exact inspection requirement.
Prepare a useful LPG enquiry
Send evidence that identifies the complete installation
Where and how it is used
Give the inspection postcode and whether the system is in a vehicle, mobile catering unit, caravan, home, commercial premises or temporary event pitch.
Labels, ownership and fill route
Photograph the complete label, markings, valve, filling point and mounting. State whether it is fixed, removable, exchanged or customer-owned.
Regulator, pipework and isolation
Show the regulator markings, changeover where fitted, accessible pipework, hoses, joints, isolation and any locker or external ventilation.
Every connected gas load
Provide make, model, data plate and purpose for every connected LPG appliance, plus faults, alterations, conversion history and current condition.
Postcode-qualified enquiries
Where Upkeepone can consider LPG work
Regular work covers London, Essex and Kent. Hertfordshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Sussex can be considered when the right LPG trade is available. Other UK areas are considered by request after the postcode, vessel, fuel, appliances, installation and required competence have been checked.
Continue with the closest LPG route
Choose the installation and output you actually need
Start at the UK LPG hub
Choose the property, catering, caravan, commercial or appliance route and state who requires the paperwork.
Declare the complete habitation system
Send the vehicle, tank or cylinder, filling point, regulator, locker, pipework and appliance information before the route is agreed.
List every appliance and supply component
Provide the trading unit, full appliance inventory, cylinders or tank, regulator, pipework, ventilation, postcode and deadline.
Photograph the safe, visible details
Use the booking checklist to gather labels, data plates, supply information, requester wording and access constraints.
