UK gas-hose selection guide
Choose a hose assembly from its rating and purpose—not colour or connector shape
Natural gas and LPG installations can use very different flexible connections. The right choice depends on the gas family, pressure at that exact point, appliance, hose standard, end fittings, length, movement, temperature and environment.
The direct answer
Five specifications matter more than the name natural-gas hose or LPG hose
Second-family gas or third-family LPG
The permanent markings or documentation must include the intended gas or gases. Some assemblies cover more than one family; many do not.
Rate the exact point in the system
LPG may be high pressure before regulation and low pressure after it. Natural-gas systems also have a designed working pressure. Use the actual maximum, not a generalisation.
Pigtail, appliance hose or vehicle line
A cylinder connection, catering appliance connector, domestic cooker connection and vehicle hose are different products with different duties.
Hose, ends and couplings work together
Material, reinforcement, swaged fittings, quick disconnect, valve, seal and restraint must be approved as the intended assembly. Do not build one from loose parts.
Heat, movement and damage exposure
The assembly must tolerate the expected temperature, cleaning chemicals, sunlight, abrasion, vibration, grease, weather and movement without kinking or strain.
Compare roles, not colours
Common flexible gas connections solve different installation problems
| Connection role | Typical supply position | Selection evidence | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| LPG cylinder pigtail or high-pressure connection | Between cylinder valve, changeover or first-stage regulator. | LPG rating, maximum pressure, valve connection, length, assembly standard, date and manufacturer instructions. | Using low-pressure appliance hose or loose clips on the cylinder side. |
| Low-pressure LPG appliance hose | Downstream of the correct regulator. | Specified LPG gas family, regulated pressure, capacity, temperature, fittings, environment and appliance instructions. | Assuming every orange hose suits every LPG appliance. |
| Natural-gas appliance connector | Between installation pipework and an approved appliance connection. | Natural-gas approval, pressure, connection type, appliance, standard, length and installation instructions. | Choosing from a bayonet shape or yellow colour without reading the rating. |
| Commercial catering hose assembly | Movable appliance with local isolation and an engineered connection arrangement. | Approved gas family, pressure, complete hose and quick-disconnect assembly, restraint, movement, castors and BS 6173 installation context. | Allowing the hose to act as the appliance restraint or moving it beyond its designed travel. |
| Vehicle or habitation flexible line | Within a vehicle propulsion or leisure-accommodation LPG installation. | Vehicle or habitation standard, pressure, vapour or liquid duty, marking, routing, protection, support and manufacturer approval. | Using a catering or portable-appliance hose because the ends appear to fit. |
Pressure changes within an LPG installation
The cylinder contains LPG at pressure; the regulator creates the appliance supply
The pressure inside an LPG cylinder or tank varies with the fuel and temperature. A correctly selected regulator reduces and controls that pressure for the downstream installation. This is why the flexible connection before the regulator can have a very different duty from a hose after it.
HSE also distinguishes low- and medium-pressure LPG service pipework at bulk installations. The appliance load, regulators and pipework design determine the actual pressure. Never diagnose a hose from the word LPG alone.
Read the product, not the colour
Seven checks should agree before a hose assembly is connected
Approved fuel family
Confirm natural gas, LPG or the stated gas families from permanent markings and the manufacturer's technical data.
Working and inlet limits
Compare the hose or assembly rating with the highest pressure possible at that point, including upstream regulator arrangements.
Correct product category
A standard number has meaning only with its scope, class and current product instructions. Do not treat one number as approval for every use.
Factory assembly and seals
Check the specified inlet and outlet connections, flow direction, quick-disconnect where relevant and whether fittings are permanently swaged or otherwise approved.
No tension, crushing or excess loops
Use the minimum practical approved length, protect it from sharp edges and heat, and prevent kinking, twisting or contact with moving parts.
Heat, chemicals, grease and weather
Confirm the rated temperature and resistance needed for the kitchen, vehicle, outdoor, industrial or domestic setting.
Traceable inspection evidence
Markings should remain legible. Use the product's replacement instructions rather than inventing a universal expiry period.
Commercial catering and movable appliances
Movement must be controlled so the connector is not pulled, crushed or overheated
HSE's catering guidance warns that flexible gas connectors can be damaged when appliances on castors are moved for cleaning. If movement is not needed, a fixed installation may remove the need for a flexible connector. Where movement is required, the appliance needs an appropriate complete hose assembly and a separate restraint.
The restraint must limit travel before the hose or connection is loaded. Locking castors, isolation, reconnection checks, ventilation and safe cleaning procedures form part of the installation—not optional accessories.
Damage and replacement
Replace the assembly when condition, markings or instructions no longer support safe use
Do not patch or reuse a damaged gas hose
Stop using a hose with cuts, cracks, hardening, blistering, abrasion, corrosion, damaged braiding, crushed sections, kinks, heat damage, chemical attack, loose fittings, illegible markings or an unauthorised repair.
Do not test for leaks with a flame. A competent person should use the appropriate gas-soundness or leak-detection procedure for the installation.
A hose that looks intact may still be unsuitable because it has the wrong rating, gas approval, fittings, length or service history. Condition and specification both matter.
If gas may be escaping
Use the emergency route for the actual supply
If safe, turn off the gas, extinguish flames, avoid electrical switches and ventilate. For mains gas in Great Britain call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. For LPG, use the supplier's emergency instructions for the cylinder, tank or installation.
If there is fire, an uncontrolled release, immediate danger or any doubt, leave the area and call 999. Upkeepone's ordinary enquiry route is not an emergency reporting service.
Prepare a useful hose or pipework enquiry
Send enough evidence to match the correct gas competence and visit scope
Natural gas, cylinder or bulk LPG
State the confirmed gas, meter or LPG supply, regulator or changeover and any known pressure markings.
Make, model and data plate
Provide every connected appliance, its approved gas category, input, installation instructions and conversion history.
Markings, fittings and condition
Photograph the full hose, printed data, both ends, quick-disconnect, restraint and any visible damage without disturbing the installation.
Where it is and what you need
Give the postcode, domestic, catering, vehicle, caravan or industrial context and the exact inspection, repair or certificate wording.
Postcode-qualified enquiries
Where Upkeepone can consider LPG work
Regular work covers London, Essex and Kent. Hertfordshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Sussex can be considered when the right LPG trade is available. Other UK areas are considered by request after the postcode, gas, supply, hose or pipework, appliance, setting and required competence have been checked.

Check current feedback before choosing a gas hose or assembly
Read Upkeepone's live Google results in their original context, then send the fuel, appliance make and model, installation setting, regulator and supply details, clear photographs of every hose marking, pressure reference, length, end connection, date and condition, full postcode and the reason for the enquiry. Upkeepone can check whether the request needs an LPG, natural-gas, catering, vehicle, property or commercial route, together with the relevant competence and current availability. Colour or appearance alone does not establish suitability, and hoses must not be treated as interchangeable.
