Why temperature changes performance

Most appliances draw vapour, so the cylinder must produce gas fast enough

Liquid LPG inside the cylinder absorbs heat and vaporises into the space above the liquid. The appliance then draws vapour through the valve and regulator. Lower ambient temperature reduces the available heat and vapour pressure; high demand also cools the cylinder as fuel evaporates.

A cylinder can therefore contain liquid but fail to provide enough vapour for a high-demand appliance. Cylinder size, fill level, temperature, fuel, regulator capacity and total connected load all affect performance. Do not solve icing or pressure loss by heating a cylinder or bypassing safety equipment.

The same fuel can sit in very different installations. Ventilation, storage, pipework, appliance categories and paperwork depend on where and how it is used.

6. Temperature and load

Cold conditions and peak demand

Confirm the expected temperature, cylinder exposure, operating duration and combined input. A fuel or cylinder suitable for one small appliance may not support several.

Cylinder storage is a safety decision

Do not turn fuel choice into a blanket indoor-or-outdoor rule

HSE workplace guidance says LPG cylinders should preferably be stored in the open air, upright on a suitable surface, separated from incompatible materials and protected from damage. Indoor storage requires a site-specific risk assessment and suitable ventilation.

The equipment, supplier instructions, building use, cylinder quantity and applicable fire and workplace duties determine the arrangement. A portable heater or camping appliance designed for one setting must not be moved into an enclosed space merely because it uses butane.

A cylinder that cannot vaporise fast enough for the appliance in the expected conditions is not a better-value choice, regardless of the advertised energy content.

Act only where it is safe

If safe, turn off the supply, extinguish flames, avoid electrical switches and ventilate the area. Contact the LPG supplier using the emergency details for the installation.

Both propane and butane vapour are heavier than air and can collect in drains, pits, basements or other low places. Do not enter a low or confined area to investigate.

If there is fire, an uncontrolled release, immediate danger or any doubt, leave the area and call 999. Do not restore the supply until a competent person has dealt with the leak.

Propane and butane FAQs

What is the main difference between propane and butane?
Both are LPG, but propane and butane have different boiling points and vapour pressures. Propane continues to produce usable vapour at much lower temperatures, while butane's vapour production becomes limited as the surrounding temperature approaches its boiling point. The appliance and supplier instructions must determine the fuel.
Can I use butane instead of propane in an LPG appliance?
Only if the appliance manufacturer explicitly permits that fuel and the complete supply arrangement is suitable. The cylinder valve, regulator, pressure, hose, injector, appliance settings and ventilation must match. Do not swap fuels because a connector appears to fit.
Why does propane generally perform better in cold weather?
At atmospheric pressure, propane boils at about minus 42 degrees Celsius while butane boils close to zero. LPG needs to vaporise to feed most appliances, so low temperature can restrict butane vapour production earlier. Actual performance also depends on the cylinder, fill level, demand and installation.
Do propane and butane use the same regulator?
Do not assume so. Regulators are selected for the fuel, inlet arrangement, outlet pressure, capacity, cylinder valve and appliance demand. Use the manufacturer- and supplier-specified regulator and connector; colour or shape alone is not reliable evidence.
Can I identify propane or butane from the cylinder colour?
Use the cylinder label, product marking and supplier information. Cylinder colours and connector styles can vary by supplier and product, so they should not be the only identification method. If the fuel cannot be confirmed, do not connect or use the cylinder.
Should LPG cylinders be stored indoors or outdoors?

Conventional propane and butane are both fossil LPG products. A fair comparison needs current product-specific emissions information, appliance efficiency, delivery impacts and the same calculation boundary. Avoid choosing from an unqualified claim that one is always greener.
Can propane and butane cylinders be mixed on one installation?
Do not combine, decant or refill cylinders yourself. Some supplied LPG products are professionally specified mixtures, but a customer should not create a mixture or connect different cylinders to one system unless the equipment manufacturer, supplier and competent installer have designed and approved that arrangement.
What should I do if I smell propane or butane?
